Celebrating Creativity: Local Workshops for Learners with Mental Disabilities

On July 13-14, 2023, we hosted an inspiring series of workshops under the Paint the Change project, specifically designed for individuals with mental disabilities. These sessions, held in collaboration with institutions affiliated with our Provincial Directorate, aimed to foster creativity and self-expression among the participants. Here’s a glimpse into the activities and their impact:

  1. Steps and Footprints

In this engaging activity, participants painted the soles of their shoes and stamped them onto paper in any pattern they desired. Following the shoe printing, many participants added their personal touch by improvising with hand prints. This activity encouraged spontaneous creativity and allowed participants to leave a unique mark.

  1. Opposites

The theme of «day and night» was chosen for this session. Participants were invited to draw the feelings and thoughts that these concepts evoked in them. After completing their artwork, they shared their interpretations with the group and then pasted their drawings onto colored background cardboard of their choice. This activity provided a platform for discussing personal perspectives and emotions associated with contrasting concepts.

  1. Self Portrait

Photographs of each participant were taken and printed in A4 size in black and white. Using acetate paper, they were asked to draw over their photos and express themselves in words. Following the drawing session, participants shared their self-portraits and reflections with the group, which were then displayed on the wall. This activity was particularly powerful in promoting self-awareness and confidence.

  1. Paper Mache

Drawing inspiration from a Spanish training session, a paper mache activity was introduced. Participants enthusiastically engaged in making and shaping their paper mache creations, demonstrating patience and creativity. This hands-on activity was a favorite, highlighting the therapeutic nature of art.

Workshop Overview

The workshops spanned two days, totaling 12 hours of immersive and joyous activities. Participants engaged with great enthusiasm, bringing their unique perspectives to each task. The spirit of art brut (raw art) was evident as they adapted the activities to their personal preferences, resulting in vibrant and diverse creations.

The sessions were not only enriching for the learners but also deeply rewarding for the trainers. The colorful and dynamic environment fostered by the participants’ creativity made for an unforgettable experience.

We look forward to continuing this journey of artistic exploration and self-expression, celebrating the unique talents and perspectives of all our participants.
